Bactrim is an antibiotic that works against bacteria causing infections. Bactrim is used to treat urinary tract and middle-ear infections, as well as chronic bronchitis when it worsens. The medication is effective against some types of diarrhea, including dysentery and traveler’s diarrhea, pneumonia, and for treatment (and sometimes for prevention) when the immune system is compromised by immunosuppressant drugs or HIV/AIDS. Bactrim is also sometimes prescribed for other types of bacterial pneumonia, for acne, and for preventing urinary tract infections.

The typical Bactrim dosage that is available is the compressed tablet with the strength 400 mg/80 mg, being Trimethoprim and Sulphamethoxazole, respectively. The drug may also be taken as an oral suspension liquid, which should be administered by using the proper dose-measuring spoon or cup in the amount prescribed by the doctor. This medication is available as oral tablet, intravenous solution, oral suspension and Bactrim double strength tablet. It is the nature of bacterial infection that determines the dosage strength for consumption. For treating urinary tract infections, the dosage would be a single double strength tablet or two ordinary tablets. Children can also be given the drug but at low dosage depending on the age and body weight. They should be given as per doctor’s advice and prescription.
